Digital Intermediate Book
Book Description
Aimed at professional cinematographers, directors and producers new to the digital intermediate process, and at facilities already providing a digital intermediate service, this guide acts as both an explanation of the various components of the digital intermediate process, and a reference of the specifications and procedures.
The book begins with an overview of the digital intermediate paradigm, before providing an explanation of the workings of the three associated forms of media: film, video, and digital images. Then the digital intermediate process is broken down into separate stages, starting with acquisition- the tools and processes required to get film video and digital footage into a digital environment. This is followed by a discussion of data management; the organisation of digital assets, paying careful attention to the potential pitfalls along the way, and conforming, the process of arranging footage to its edited form.
Next, the creative processes of restoration, color grading, and effects and titles are covered, showing the multitude of possibilities afforded by a digital intermediate process. The last stage of the process, outputting the digital source master to different formats, is backed up by an overview of the quality control process.
The last part of the book serves as a more open-ended discussion of the possibilities for the future of this new industry, as well as some of the more esoteric options, such as shooting chroma-key, making video look like film, and timeslicing.

Jack James originally started in the field of computer animation, but made the leap into Digital Intermediates while working at Kodak’s Cinesite Digital Lab. While at Cinesite, James was given the opportunity to work on HBO’s “Band of Brothers,” a pioneer in broadcast quality DI film. His contribution on this film to workflows of data management, film restoration, and conforming within DI established the procedures and protocols which have since become industry standard. Since leaving Cinesite, James has worked on several films for other companies, most recently Miramax’s “Cold Mountain” and Paramount’s “Sahara.”
